CALCUTTA

Each year we run a Calcutta to allow teams to wager on their angling skills. This is legal in Maine, as long as you are wagering on your own team to win, and not on other teams in the tournament.

In 2010 we will offer a SINGLE ‘winner takes all’ pool of money for teams to opt into if they choose (ENTIRELY OPTIONAL). The cost to enter this pool is $250.00 per team. All of the money that is put into this pool by teams registered in the tournament will be awarded to the team who entered the pool and lands the SINGLE SHARK YIELDING THE GREATEST POINT TOTAL among the teams that entered that pool. In other words, a 230 lb mako (230 x 1.5 = 345 points) would beat a 340 lb blue shark (340 x 1.0 = 340 points). Therefore, even though the overall tournament winner will again be determined by a two day point TOTAL in 2010, the pool winner will be based on a SINGLE SHARK POINT TOTAL ALONE. The tournament does NOT take any money from the winners pool. It all goes to the winner of the pool.

The rule of a minimum 9.0 foot fork length for blue sharks applies to the winner's pool as well as to the general tournament (i.e., no blue sharks with a fork length of less than 9.0 feet can be weighed in for the pool money). In theory, a team could win both the winners pool AND the tournament.

In the unlikely event that no team registered in the winners pool weighs in an eligible shark in the tournament, all of the team’s who entered the winners pool will have their $250 fee refunded at the end of the tournament. We will have an individual available at the Captain’s dinner on 8/26 to enroll teams into the winners pool, if they wish to enter. This pool will be a ‘cash only’ event, so be sure to bring cash for this if your team decides ahead of time that they want to enter the winners pool.
